Job Description

Mazevo Coffee in Billings, MT, is looking for one head coffee roaster to join our 7-person strong team. We are located at 5229 King Ave W. Our ideal candidate is self-driven, ambitious, and engaged.

Position Overview:

As the Head Roaster at Mazevo Coffee Roasters, you will play a pivotal role in leading our roasting operations and ensuring the highest quality of our coffee products. You will oversee the roasting process from green bean selection to the final product, working closely with our production team, quality control staff, and other departments to maintain and elevate our standards. This full-time position offers the opportunity to significantly impact a growing company with a strong commitment to excellence.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Roasting Operations: Manage and execute all roasting activities, including green bean selection, roast profiling, and quality control. Ensure consistency and excellence in every batch.
  • Recipe Development: Collaborate with the product development team to create and refine coffee blends and single-origin profiles. Experiment with new roasting techniques and technologies to enhance flavor profiles.
  • Quality Control: Implement and maintain rigorous quality control procedures to monitor and ensure the consistency of roasted coffee. Conduct regular taste tests and adjust profiles as needed.
  • Team Leadership: Supervise and mentor roasting team members, guiding best practices, safety protocols, and professional development. Foster a positive and collaborative work environment.
  • Equipment Maintenance: Oversee the maintenance and calibration of roasting equipment. Coordinate with maintenance staff to address any mechanical issues promptly.
  • Inventory Management: Manage inventory levels of green coffee beans and other supplies. Work with the purchasing team to forecast needs and maintain optimal stock levels.
  • Training and Development: Develop and conduct training programs for new and existing staff on roasting techniques, equipment use, and quality standards.
  • Safety and Compliance: Ensure compliance with all safety regulations and industry standards. Implement and enforce safe working practices in the roasting facility.

  • Strong leadership and team management skills, with the ability to inspire and guide a team.
  • Excellent organizational and problem-solving abilities, with attention to detail and a commitment to quality.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and adapt to changing priorities.
  • Strong communication skills and a collaborative approach to working with cross-functional teams.
  • Must be able to move 100-lb bags of green coffee.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of coffee bean varieties, roasting techniques, and flavor profiles.
  • Experience with roasting equipment and technology, including troubleshooting and maintenance.
